Chapter 46 - Flight

 "They're coming!" Miranda cried. "Run!"

They ran, feet pounding on the rough cobblestone of Old Windenburg.

"This way!" Miranda and Jenny shouted together.

"Jenny, wait," Claudette cried, as they separated. "No..."

"Get the girl!" Max snapped. "I'll take care of the witness..."

"Claudette," Faust sighed, appearing behind them in a flash, "I am so disappointed in you."

"They're not here," Beth said, sniffing the air, "but they were, not long ago."

"That way," she added.

"What are you waiting for!?" Cassie cried, taking off.

"You heard her," Gwen said as they started after her.

Chapter 45 - Rescue

"Alright," Gwen said as they settled around the table, "You all know why we're here, what we believe we're up against and why we asked for your help"

"Yeah, about help," Xander jumped in. "I talked to Lilith, like you asked. She said, in no uncertain terms, that she couldn't allow any of her vampires to help. She isn't willing to start open fighting with Miss H and her supporters."

"Any of her vampires," Cassie said. "What about you?"

"She told me not come," Xander said sadly. "I told her where she could shove it. I'm here. We're getting her back."

"The same goes for the Collective," Jake said. "Kristopher is very sympathetic but 'the Collective will still not fight your war.'"

"... and we're here," Beth add. "We're getting her back."

Gwen smiled, "Let's get her back. Here's what I now know..."

"You're early," Miranda said. "The potion won't wear off 'til morning. "

"Sit down... please," Claudette sighed raggedly. "I... We need to talk."

"You need to get out of here," Claudette continued. "Tonight... now."

"Love to," Miranda said, "but... prisoners."

"No... I'm... oh gods," Claudette stammered, "I'm helping you escape, OK?"

"What?!" Jenny cried, "What kind of lame trick is this? Why would we ever trust you? You betrayed her, kidnapped us!"

"Yes!" Claudette cried. "I'm a horrible person. We've established that. But I'm not a murderer!"

 "Murderer?" Miranda gasped.

"Father arrived a little while ago," Claudette explained, "with one of the vampires. He... It was the first time... the first time... he asked me to sit with him in a meeting. Like an equal! The client, the person behind all this, will be calling your mom's in the morning with the ransom demands... really weird ones too, not just money but quitting show business and a potion of eternal youth... but they're not going to let you go, even once the demands are met! They're going to give you to vampires... they're going to kill you!"

"Oh God,"Jenny gasped. "We're going to die!"

"No!" Claudette said firmly, "I know everything I've done... but I'm not a murderer. Father left a little while ago with Max and the vampire, Markus. They'll be back soon but for now it's just me and Wolfgang guarding you... and I can handle Wolfgang."

"I know you don't trust me... but please, please... this may be are only chance."

"What choice do we have?" Miranda said. "Let's go."

Chapter 44 - An Unguarded Heart

The choices that we make shape the paths of our lives in ways even the Wise cannot always predict. With every one, we decide who we are and who we will become. Will we be cruel or kind? Will we be selfish or giving? Will we close ourselves off or will we open to the world our unguarded heart?

"Hello Londyn," Gwen said. "Is Mariah here?"

"Oh my God," Londyn gasped after Gwen explained what had happened to Miranda. "I hadn't heard anything about this. Do the police know anything?"

"Cassie's people have been keeping it out of press as much as possible." Gwen said, "and no, the police... aren't being much help. It's complicated."

"Gwen, what are you doing here?" Mariah said, adding with studied casualness, "Is Miranda with you?"

"That's something I need to talk to you about," Gwen replied gently.

"No," Mariah sobbed. "Oh God, no."

"I'll kill them!" she cried a moment later, "If they hurt her, I'll... I'll rip their hearts out!"

"Mariah, sweatheart, calm down," Londyn said, worried. "That a deep breath."

"I'll kill them, Londyn," Mariah repeated vehemently.

"No," Gwen's voice was soft, yet somehow filled the room, the house.

"We will find her," Gwen continued. "We will get her back safely but to that I need your help, Mariah. I need your heart."

"Anything," Mariah's said, her eyes bright. "Anything!"

_______________

"You love Miranda and she you," Gwen said. "You each gave each other a piece of your hearts. It was through that connection, that shared heart, that Miranda was able to find you in your darkness... and it is through that connection that you can find her now."

"OK," Mariah said, trying not to fidget. "but I'm not a witch? And couldn't you or Cassie do this... I mean Cassie's her mom."

"They have warded her against us," Gwen said calmly, "found a way to shield against our hearts... but I believe they have not... could not... guard against yours. Now I must ask you to do something very difficult."

"Anything!" Mariah declared.

"Trust yourself."

"Jeez, you don't ask for much," Mariah whispered half to herself.

She wasn't sure if she heard Gwen's reply or only felt it, echoing though her mind.

I ask for everything.

Yes... follow that. There... There!

___________

"I'm coming with you!" Mariah demanded. "I found her, and I'm coming with you to rescue her!"

"Mariah, no," Gwen replied. "I won't tell you that Londyn and Danielle would never allow it, because you won't care. I won't tell you it's too dangerous... that we're up against not only violent criminals but dark magic and monsters you barely believe exist... because you Still Won't Care. But please, believe me when I tell you that I came here by magic... magic which does not allow me to bring  you with me... and we don't have time to fly back by mortal means."

"Alright," Mariah snarled, tears shining in her eyes. "Damn it, alright... but you save her. You bring her back to me."

"I Promise."

Chapter 43 - Cracks in the Wall

Damn it, Claudette thought, why does she have to be so nice?

Another dose of the potion, another day stripped of her powers. Another day for her to be a helpless prisoner. Claudette didn't think she could have borne it, had their places been reversed. It was necessary, she reminded herself. It was all part of Father's plan.

"Are you OK?" Miranda asked.

"What?" Claudette jerked out her own thoughts, stunned. "What do mean am I OK?"

"Well, you don't look OK," Miranda replied.
"I'm not the prisoner here!" Claudette snapped. "Why are you being so nice to me? I only pretended to be your friend!" she continued. "I betrayed you. I lied to you. I seduced you, and... oh yeah... I kidnapped you! We're enemies! Understand? Enemies!"

"OK," Miranda replied calmly. "So answer me this... if we're enemies, why didn't you let me break up with Mariah."

"What?"

"That night, before we went to the club," Miranda said, "I was going to call Mariah, to tell me about us, to break it off with her. You wouldn't let me. You said I should wait because I might change my mind about you. Looking back, you as good as warned me. Why? Why didn't you let me break up with her?"

"Because it was all a lie," Claudette cried. "I was seducing you and betraying you... and I didn't... didn't want to... to take that away from you too. I... didn't..."

"Shut up! It doesn't matter," she cried suddenly, storming out of the room.

"But I thought you were my enemy," Miranda called softly after her.

"So did I," Claudette whispered.

"OK, I don't get you," Jenny said. "She's right. She lied to you, seduced you, betrayed you and kidnapped you. Why the hell are you being nice to her?!"

"Kidnapping 101," Miranda said. "Try to make the kidnappers see you as a person, not a thing. It's easy for her to do this seeing me as enemy. Maybe it isn't so easy for her, if she sees me as Miranda."

"OK, that's kinda smart," Jenny admitted, "and kinda sneaky."

"Yeah," Miranda sighed. "I saw it on a TV show."

"Did it work?" Jenny asked. "In the show, did it work?"

"Not really," Miranda admitted.

"So," Jenny said after a moment of silence, "you're really just being nice to her because you still care."

Miranda considered a moment, "I know what she did. I know it was a lie... but I don't think she's as sure about herself as she pretends to be. We'll never be friends again... but maybe we don't have to be enemies."

Chapter 42 - Cards on the Table

It was the following night before Xander was able to rejoin Cassie and Gwen, following their directions to arrive at Glimmerbrook Watch late. Still, he found his sister and her wife awake and restless, having spent the day investigating on their own. They all had a great deal to share.

First, however, Gwen insisted that Xander explain how he came to be a vampire.

"The question," Gwen said coolly, "is can we really trust you."

Gwen's suspicion didn't hurt Xander half as much as seeing doubt in his sisters eyes, but he couldn't fault them. He knew enough about the events of last year to guess that their dealings with Vlad had left them distrustful of vampires.

So, for the first time, he shared his story - Filling in some of what they didn't know about his relationships with Elsa and Morgan, explaining about his relationship with Lilith, and finally about that fateful night. He told them how Max Villareal had shot him, killed him in fact, and how Lilith had saved him the only way she could.

"Max," Cassie gasped. "Oh God, I have to tell you. We went into the city today, investigating. Our friend Jenny is missing too. I went to her apartment and spoke to her... well, roommate, kind of... Olivia. She was a reporter and..."

"Wait, Olivia? Olivia Kim-Lewis? Olivia's dead," Xander said.

"Yes," Gwen said matter of factly.

"Right," Xander said, "Nevermind, go on."

"It seems Jenny has been dating Max," Cassie continued. "Olivia said they met in Sulani, shortly after she finished filming there... he must have been watching us. I can only guess he moved in on her to get close to us. Olivia tried to warn Jenny about him, but she was totally enamored of him."

"Yeah," Xander said bitterly, "I've seen that before. He can a real charmer when he wants to be, until her shows his true colors."

"I hate to say it, but this gets worse," Xander continued, "Remember I said I thought those cops knew more than they let on. I tracked down that Detective Williams, to see if I could find out what he knew. He has a description of the two men who were seen loading Miranda into a van outside of PanEuropa... perfect matches for Max V and his faithful goon Wolfgang."

"If they know who's behind this, why aren't they doing something," Cassie demanded.

"Yeah, that's the 'it gets worse' part," Xander said. "I used a little vampire charm on Detective Williams. Turns out the good detective was familiar with us. He's been a thrall of the vampires for years... a servant of Count Straud until his disappearance. So was Max. Now, William's told me, they both serve a new vampire... Miss H."

"I've heard of her," Gwen said. "She's making a play for Vlad's place as master vampire here."

"Big time," Xander agreed. "The vampire community is divided between Lilith's people (me included) and Vlad's former supporters, a lot of whom are rallying behind Miss H. Looks like she's been working to pick up his mortal network too."

"So, the cops work for the vampires," Cassie groaned.

"Well, this one does anyway," Xander said. "He's got standing instructions to protect other thralls, like Max, from official investigations. That's probably why the little weasel didn't get picked up last year. They couldn't protect the Landgraabs... too much attention... but Max V slipped through."

"So, no help from the police," Cassie fought back tears. "Can this get any worse?"

"Yes," Gwen said gently. "The other girl who is missing - Claudette Blackwood - I did some digging.

"There aren't many witch families around anymore and I didn't recall her's at first," Gwen explained to Xander. "The other girls at Brookside remembered her saying she grew up near old Windenburg, so I started there..."

"I dug through the historical records and genealogies for the old city," Gwen continued. "The Blackwoods were, indeed an old family. They lost their fortunes generations ago but had been prominent enough that it wasn't hard to find them. It also wasn't hard, when you know what to look for, to recognize that they had, indeed been an old magical family."

"The last living Blackwood on record was a Gretchen Blackwood... and the last record of her was of her marriage almost twenty years ago. The priest I spoke with at Windenburg Cathedral was very helpful. He'd been a seminary student at the time, but he had been there and actually helped in the ceremony. He remembered it especially, because despite there being almost no one in attendance, the groom insisted on a full ceremonial wedding."
"He said young Gretchen seemed deliriously happy to become Mrs Professor John Faust."

"Faust?!" Cassie cried.

"Who?" Xander asked.

"A dark wizard," Gwen explained, "and another servant of Count Vlad Straud... who, incidentally, according to the good Father was one of the few attendees at the wedding. Faust is centuries old, a mortal who ascended to magical power. He was respected member of the magical community until it was discovered that he practices forbidden, dark magic. He works with the vampires, with Vlad particularly and now probably with this Miss H."

"That explains how they knew to confuse my Sight," Gwen continued, "It would take dark magic  to shield Miranda from us now. Faust must have learned from his mistakes last year."

"So, Claudette?" Xander puzzled.

"Is, I believe, Faust's daughter," Gwen replied grimly, "likely his apprentice and weapon, which he has aimed at Miranda."

"By why?" Cassie cried. "Why did he take Miranda?"

"I don't know," Gwen admitted. "I've been more concerned with how. How exactly has he hidden her from us? From... our... Oh... OH... Great Goddess, OF COURSE!"
"He'll have taken precautions," Gwen continued, "He has mortal agents. We'll need help. Xander! If you can get Lilith or any of her vampires to help... Cassie, can you go to Moonwood Mill? See if the Jake and the Collective will come."

"Yes, yes!" Cassie gasped.

"What?!" Xander demanded. "What have you figured out?"

"Even if she answered, you probably wouldn't understand," Cassie shook her head. "I never do."

"I need to do one thing," Gwen said, "then we're getting Miranda back!"

In Shadow - Ch 22 - New Plan

"So... you're a witch?" Genie asked.  The lingering summer heat had long ago banished the deathly chill from Jenny's apart...
